Managing Appraisals and Performance Reviews using TimeMerlin

With TimeMerlin, you can easily conduct appraisals and performance reviews and use any combination of measures such as competency levels and performance metrics. You can conduct reviews as often (or as rarely) as you like, although uncited research shows that formal appraisals are most effective if done every 6-12 months. (That said, informal feedback should be provided at least once a month.)

The Basic Process: The basic process couldn't be simpler (still we wonder, why does appraisal process in industry typically take more than 45 days to be completed).

  1. Administrator creates appraisal for a specific user and for a specific time frame and ensures the measurable items of the appraisal match the user's expectations and the organization's expection of the user. (Ideally, these items come directly from an employment/contractor agreement, or job description.)
  2. Appraisal is locked (for editing), and assigned to reviewers. Reviewers can be appraisees themselves (self reviews), peers (peer reviews), supervisors or others. The reviewers are notified and periodically reminded until they complete their reviews (all by TimeMerlin - no manual reminding required).
  3. Once enough reviews have been completed (as determined by the administrator), the reviews can be consolidated and the appraisee notified that they can review their final results. (At this point, the HR can take any actions as appropriate as well.)

Appraisal Templates: One of the tricks of the appraisal trade are to create templates, which are designed once, and can be instantiated for multiple users. This creates uniformity, and also allows you to take a higher level view beyond just one individual. Many enterprises have one template per role, for example, a "Customer Service Representative Template", a "Shift Leader Template", etc. Many enterprises have one template per role, per maturity level, for example, "Sr. Software Developer", "Software Developer", etc. Although it is tempting to reuse appraisal templates from previous year, we highly encourage that you review the entire appraisal process itself every year, and improve the templates themselves so that they are best aligned to your business objectives.
